Bare Care Tips

Brass is known for its bright luster and golden gleam. When new and cleaned, this metal has a shine as good as gold. However, over time, brass tends to get dull and tarnish and therefore needs to be properly cared for to maintain its look.

Returning brass to its original look is not difficult. Using a few natural household ingredients, you can bring out the shine you want from your brass jewelry.

Cleaning Brass:

LEMON JUICE METHOD

You will need:

  • A squeeze of lemon juice - half a lemon (depending on amount of jewellery, for small quantity a squeeze is sufficient)
  • 1 Cup of warm water
  • Bowl/cup
  • Clean smooth Cloth

Mix the solution, you can also add a little salt for a deeper clean. Rest the jewellery in the solution for up to 5 minutes. Afterwards remove the jewellery, rinse with clean water and lightly buff the jewellery with a clean and smooth cloth.

I have also found simple lemon juice on a cloth to be quite effective for light tarnish - just buff the jewellery with the lemon juice on cloth and you'll see the tarnish come off. This is a good technique for septum jewellery in the nose, an easy way to clean daily without removing.

SALT/ VINEGAR/ FLOUR PASTE METHOD

You will need:

  • Teaspoon of salt
  • Half cup of vinegar
  • Some flour

Mix these three ingredients to create a smooth paste, adding flour as required. Apply this mixture onto your brass jewelry and leave it for about 15 minutes. Next, use a soft brush/ cloth to gently scrub the mixture off under warm running water

Disclaimer -
Brass does tarnish. Brass septum rings require reqular cleaning - as the jewellery is in close proximity to moisture and breath, the jewellery can tarnish quickly. A gentle wipe with lemon juice removes tarnish.

Brass isn't always suitable for sensitive skin or if you have metal allergies. To be worn in through healed and established piercings. When oxidation occurs, it can sometimes turn your skin green, this is easily wiped off.

Don't get me wrong - brass is very beautiful, but can be slightly higher maintenance then silver or steel for example.
This is the nature of bass and something you should be aware of when purchasing. Worn jewellery is not accepted for returns due to hygeine reasons.
